Espoo, Finland, April 30, 2024 Nokia and Vodafone today announced that they have successfully completed an end-to-end Open RAN trial on Vodafone Italy’s live 5G standalone network. The trial leveraged Nokia’s AirScale Massive MIMO radios and Dell’s (NYSE: ) PowerEdge XR8000 servers and Nokia baseband software running on Red Hat OpenShift, the industry-leading hybrid cloud application platform powered by Kubernetes, connected to Nokia’s standalone dedicated 5G core. The trial highlights the maturity of Nokia's anyRAN approach, which is designed to provide mobile operators and enterprises with greater flexibility in building networks. sex.

Nokia supports open fronthaul capabilities on top of its high-performance RAN software, ensuring mobile operators maintain performance consistency with their existing RAN. Nokia has integrated with five Open Radio Unit (O-RU) vendors, highlighting the openness and industry-leading performance of Nokia AirScale O-RAN DU/CU. The solution provides operators with greater flexibility, efficiency and scalability for their mobile networks. Through integration with Red Hat OpenShift, service providers also have the option to expand their 5G network coverage and quickly launch new services.

Vodafone aims to have 30% of its base stations in Europe adopt Open RAN technology by 2030, and has already deployed the technology commercially. These include 2,500 Open RAN sites in the UK, the first large-scale deployment in Europe and Romania. By partnering with key strategic suppliers such as Nokia, Vodafone is leading the wider adoption of open, decentralized and automated networks, providing greater flexibility to rapidly adopt and launch innovative customer-focused services.
