NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Empire State Building (ESB) today launched a street-to-observation takeover for New York City fans in partnership with WhatsApp, featuring Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team drivers. Debut Lewis Hamilton celebrated the rapid growth of WhatsApp in the US with a dynamic light show and street-level F1 racing demonstration on New York City's iconic Fifth Avenue. Engagement opportunities for F1 fans continue this week with the chance to see the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s iconic cars and immersive emoji experiences firsthand.

We’re excited to tap into the Empire State Building’s truly international voice and host the ultimate event for Mercedes-AMG F1 fans in our Observation Deck, welcoming guests to get an up-close look at the team’s racing cars and interactive WhatsApp emoticon displays of the world’s famous Empire State Building Observatory, said Jean-Yves Ghazi, director of the Empire State Building Observatory. He continued that he was delighted to welcome Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff to the WhatsApp partnership, but only for the Empire State Building Observatory experience.

ESB participates in the Grand Prix
On April 29, ESB debuted a vibrant WhatsApp x Mercedes-AMG F1 race under the lights, featuring new emoji cars. The new emoji car competes against other emoji cars in Lower Manhattan, highlighting New York City's famous neighborhoods and emoticon yorkers surrounding WhatsApp message bubbles. A light display on the south facade from 8:30pm to 10:30pm shows Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team driver Lewis Hamilton and CEO and team principal Toto Wolff (Toto Wolff) Visited the Empire State Building earlier in the day to check out the world-famous Observatory Experience and flip the ceremonial switch before the dynamic light show.

Travel through New York City
Earlier today, seven-time world champion Hamilton delighted fans as he drove the 2021 Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E PERFORMANCE down Fifth Avenue between 35th and 33rd Streets. The Briton won eight grands prix with the W12 and helped the team win the World Constructors' Championship that year.

Hamilton said, I have always felt that I have a special connection with the United States. I remember visiting New York as a kid and dreaming of living in the city, and I've been lucky enough to spend a lot of time here since then. I've had so many incredible experiences in New York and made connections with so many amazing people, but driving an F1 car down Fifth Avenue and lighting up the Empire State Building is very special. The Empire State Building's iconic Fifth Avenue lobby windows now feature special 2D and 3D emoji-themed designs depicting a scene from a Formula 1 garage loaded with tools, technology and stickers. The window display will remain on display until May 7.

Visitors to the Empire State Building Observation Deck can see life-size emoji cars and rest stops on the building's 80th floor. WhatsApp and Mercedes-AMG F1 branded engineering stations will feature versions of Formula 1 maintenance technology. The audio will simulate the noise of a fully functional F1 racing crew. The 80th floor of the Empire State Building will also be decorated with Mercedes-AMG F1 memorabilia, including three Formula One trophies, driver overalls, boots, gloves and helmets.

Once guests arrive at the iconic 86th floor observation deck, fans can pose in a WhatsApp chat against the backdrop of ESB’s unparalleled New York City views and watch Benz-AMG F1 W14 E PERFORMANCE show car, deadline is May 7th.
